Story- Anne Ross Cousin was a gifted writer of hymns who was inspired by the dying words of the great Samuel Rutherford a forceful, eloquent, evangelical preacher. Samuel suffered persecution in Scotland for being part of a Non-conformist movement. He fiercely opposed the state run church, an opposition which was fueled by his conscience and knowledge of Scripture. He was banished to Anworth for many years where he wrote many of the now famous "Letters of Samuel Rutherford" (see Banner of Truth Trust).
At the end of his life he was charged with high treason, which had a penalty of being beheaded. He was on his death bed when he summoned to stand before the King's Court.
He answered, "I behoove to answer my first summons and ere your day for me arrives, I will be where few kings and great folks come." See Osbeck, Kenneth (my college fine arts teacher). Amazing Grace (1990) - (2002), Grand Rapids: Kregel Publications, p. 280).
My Story, An Old Woman and an Old BookThe year was 1985 and I was with my wife Robyn and my then three children in Southern Florida.
This was the year that was the onset of my bipolar 2 disorder.
I was at the then Barton Road Baptist Church and was with an evangelism explosion team. I think the contact was a 'cold' call.
My team and I were invited into her house by a grandmother. We sat in her simple, cozy living room. The woman had a hard time with an American English accent. I think she was from Jamaica or perhaps Haiti.
As I was sharing the gospel with her when she started waving her hand and said something that sounded like, "Six, sonkee".
I did not understand what she was saying. She added, in broken English, "when I was little girl, mom sang sanky. "It then dawned on me; this grandmother was excited about something in her childhood that came to the forefront of her memory as we brought up
Scripture. As I talked about the Lord Jesus Christ; I thought, "Sonkee, six". She is talking about a name. I realized that buried in this old woman's memory was that her Mother after her family evening meal use to have everyone in the family sing from Ira Sankey's (D.L. Moody's famous song leader) Gospel Hymn Book, Number 6.
I acknowledged that I understood what she was saying and a smile came across her face. In God's providence we had come across this lady's path and encouraged her to "ask for the old paths" “Thus says the LORD, "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls" (Jeremiah 6:16).
I have a copy of Gospel Hymns NOS. 1 to 6 Complete; For use in Gospel Meetings and
Other Religious Services by Ira Sankey James McGranahan and George C. Stebbins. New York, The Biglow & Main Company (copy right 1894). What are two of my favorite songs in it.
You guessed it the hymns, (The Sands of Time are Sinking) are no. 67 (Immanuel's Land) and no. 252 (The Sands of Time).
Abide with Me by Henry Lyte - One of the most popular hymns of all times.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoFO8hfEucg&NR=1
Henry Francis Lyte was desperately ill with tuberculosis. He did not expect to live. He was so sick, in fact, that he had prepared a farewell sermon to preach later on this morning, September 4, 1847. Meanwhile he drew a paper toward him on which he had begun to write some verses:
Fifty-four-year-old Henry was used to living with one foot in the grave when he preached his final sermon. He reminded his hearers that we must all die and that those who have embraced the death of Christ in their lives are best prepared to face the body's death. "I stand here among you today, as alive from the dead, if I may hope to impress it upon you, and induce you to prepare for that solemn hour which must come to all, by a timely acquaintance with the death of Christ."
He planned to go to Italy where he hoped sunshine and warmth would restore him. He made it only as far as Nice, France. There he became so ill he had to rest. Again God helped with him in the form of an English clergyman who nursed him. Ten weeks after preaching his farewell sermon, Henry died.
